Signature Series

Postby ElSecundo » Wed Jan 15, 2014 9:05 am

Every once in a while, a company gets known for a particular series of cars. In the past, for example, Carrera kind of dominated the vintage NASCAR series, Ninco was known for its classics, etc.

It seems like Sideways is grabbing a hold of the Group 5 racers like the Porsche 935/78, the Capri, and now the Ferrari 512 BB. Scalextric seems to be reasserting its hold on Trans Am. Are there any other series currently being done where the manufacturer seems to be 'laying a claim'?

Well, Group C belongs to Slot.it...at least I think so? :)

How about Cartrix and their vintage Grand Prix series?

Sure, they've put out other cars, but I'd venture that they wouldn't still be in business were it not for their single seaters.

Looks like Scalextric is really making a play for the vintage GP series, too, though not as old as the cars that Cartrix is doing. Late 60s to late 70s. Their 2014 catalog is really heavy with this stuff!

I like it when one manufacturer brings out several different cars that raced in a particular class. It makes the competition more even than the 1:1 cars were. Slot.It has fair coverage of the GT and CanAm cars from the late 1960's-1970's too, as well as Fly. Not to mention Carrera and their coverage of early NASCAR, CanAm and modern GT cars

Yeah, there's a good case for Carrera making Can Am a 'signature series' for them, but just about everybody does modern GT. Slot.It *might* be making a play for Can Am with the Chappies and now the M8D, but they're not nearly as diverse as Carrera.

Just to make a distinction, 'fair coverage' and calling it a signature series are two different things. When it's a signature series, that company practically owns it. Like Harry said, Slot.It and Group C. Somebody else may dip their foot in the water (like Mr. Slotcar), but when people think of Group C, it's all Slot.It. :)

Fly certainly owned the LeMans offerings from the late 60's to mid 70's for sure!!!!

908s, 917s, 512s, etc. etc. etc....

How about Racer for early-mid 60's Ferrari Le Mans prototypes?

Or, getting in to rolling jewelry, Top Slot for Pegaso? (granted, I never even heard of Pegaso before I saw the slot cars)

SCX for rally cars ?

Ninco JGTC - wish they still did them

Fly - just about everything - when you think about it it would be easier to name what Fly didn't do than what they did (no classic GP or sports cars like Cartrix or Ninco comes to mind) Otherwise they were pretty much there with most classes and eras at least from the mids 60s onward that I can think of.

Definitely SCX for classic rally cars.

And as Roger's signature says surely Fly's signature is "turning enthusiasts into tuners."

Interesting thread. I'm glad to see this trend happening - I think chances are good that cars within the same series will be better matched performance-wise when they're from the same maker. Reading this thread I'm surprised to see that there really are a lot of manufactures following the trend. Here's one manufacturer that's been defunct now for several years but who brought some very nice, if over scale, Can Am cars to our hobby: Vanquish MG.

Fast brings up a sore spot for me. I loved the Vanquish cars. I still have three. It was stupid for them to have so much dedication to detail and innovation, and use a silly new scale with no reason for existence. The differential they provided was entirely maligned as far as I can say. (if you simply packed the simplified diff with R/C car grease, they ran great and worked perfectly for long time- I still haven't had a problem) Of course, it has to be said that there was no clue in what came with the car that said this was the case.

I don't think anyone would disagree when I say that Vanquish, if in a normal scale, could have owned the Can Am market. Good price, excellent product, and dependable delivery from the works without delay.
