Did you guys get to see Monkey (aka Monkey Magic)? It was an English dub of a Japanese version of a Chinese story of the monkey god. Absolutely hilarious stuff.

Yes Sir, a lot of allowances went to penny candy. There were lots of cheap die cast toys, too.
There is an annual toy swap meet at the county fairgrounds near by, and I love to go and
just look at all the toys from days gone by. I even buy some just to reminisce, Who remembers
the little red die cast bombs that you put a cap inside? Or spud guns? Or the little die cast airplanes?
And wooden tops that you wound a string around to spin it up? And pea shooters? And all metal skates
that clamped onto your shoes? And for those with no money, they just made toys from just about
anything. Back when soda cans were made from tin plate, we would stomp on them sideways to get
them to clamp onto our shoes to make clip-clops. Guns made from broomsticks and swords made
from plaster lath and covered with tin foil. There were a million ways for kids to have fun in the
'50s. Now kids only have computers to play with. And if they want to get together with other
neighborhood kids they have to make a "play date".

Sarge, that rifle was made in Savannah, TN, by Parris Manufacturing, and yes they are still ongoing. They have a lot more than the old Springfield now.

During WWII, they made dummy rifles for recruits to drill with, correct size and weight, but not anything that tied up real weapons to hinder the war effort. They made 2 million of them. I went to school with a guy who was from Savannah, and he had one that was about to fall apart that he kept as a remembrance of home. Little wooden, gold painted 30-06 was still in it. Did you ever notice that the little bitty rifle had a full sized bullet for no apparent reason? That's because Daddy would get a kick out of seeing it in there.

Dave, I had an online outfit that sold DVD sets at a huge discount in my bookmarks for years, and I went to see them a lot. They folded when our money went down the tubes, but they were great for a long time. I got everything Monty Python ever did, the same for Crime Story, Cybill, Murphy Brown, The Kids In the Hall, Thunderbirds, Banacek, and lots of others including a flock of BBC comedies and mysteries. It was a treasure chest, and I wish I could have done more.

Waiting all weekend until 5 pm Sunday to watch "Combat" and in later years "Black Sheep Squadron" on Friday nights at 7.30.

The other thing that sadly gone is when My Brother and I would just disappear from sunup till sundown during the Summer Holidays and our parents not having to worry if we were okay. If my kids did that nowadays I'd be panicking. Too many weirdos around.

Ted, I think about that all the time. We learned to be confident, responsible, and self-sufficient from unsupervised play. Where I lived, there were alligators, so we were restricted from the bayous until we were old enough. The town was small, and we could ride bikes all day without our mothers being worried. Then, when we were old enough to explore, and we could go where the alligators were and see the pelicans, nutria, and other amazing wildlife. We would secretly climb railroad bridges and do other forbidden things. We sat all afternoon once, watching real gandydancers work, hand repairing the tracks and singing all the time. We hung far up in trees to see the L&N passenger train (the Humming Bird) zoom through the swamps just a couple of feet above the water.

We had great fun with our cap guns. I have the German Luger - coolest gun ever. Walkie talkies were also great but batteries were a forever issue in my day. Recall, this was before the coppertop battery. Nine lives black cat batteries still bring me a sense of dread and not enough power.

Quality Saturday morning cartoons, Bugs, Road Runner. Anybody remember Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp? Hilarious, I found the DVD at Amazon, gotta get it. I thought those tiger paws you could get from a gas station, cant recall which one, were cool hanging from the rear view mirror. Those two glass balls hanging on a string (stop it) that would leave knots all over your forearms when knocking them together, cant recall the name, thats a real toy right there!

Black-and-White television. I had a 9" black-and-white Zenith TV in my room until I inherited the old family Trinitron about 1989. The Twilight Zone and The Addams Family wouldn't be half as spooky in color.

Speaking of which...American television brands - Zenith, Magnavox, Quasar...."Quaaaasaaaarrrrr..." Those names eventually became associated in my mind with sitting in the daycare woman's basement watching a flickering picture in an old beat-up wood cabinet with brown burlap-like fabric around the edges.
