I made a "concrete" base out of a piece of masonite. I scribed the expansion lines into it & then painted it an aged concrete color & aged it a bit. It will get a final dusting of chalk to add a "rubbered in" area where the cars pull up to the gas pumps. Of course, I will add some oil stains too & some clutter. I also want to add an old tow truck & a junk car parked behind the station.

Here is the start of the next structure. As you know, Route 66 seemed to have a motel every few miles so I want to have at least 2 on the layout. Both will have colorful reproductions of actual signs from the route.

What I do is to first cut a piece of cardboard to fit the area. This helps me plan where I want everything to go. I write notes on the cardboard as I brainstorm ideas for the area. Later this cardboard template will be used to create a Masonite base. Next I will make a quick & dirty cardboard mock up of the structure so that I can better envision how a finished structure will look in the spot.

The Texaco station is unbelievable! Wow! I like what looks like a night picture of the outside with the interior lights on...!

Very cool!

I've started on the Route 66 Motel. It is made out of foam core & styrene. The base/sidewalk is styrene & the roof is foam core. I want to add a bit of an interior to the office & one of the rooms will have the door open w/a girl lying on the bed. Of course, it will get a colorful roadside sign & I plan on adding lights & neon to this one as well. It is odd shaped because it fits in the corner. I'd say this is about 20% complete.

I added a few simple details & weathered it a bit. The TV antenna on the office came out crappy but for some reason it looks good all bent up & twisted.

Absolutely stunning work! The details are amazing - boxes on the shelves, compressor, tool chest, counter tops, posters, toilet paper... the weathering and lighting.... all of it superb!

A few more details & some more weathering. I lost the TV antenna so I made a new one out of styrene & wire.

Very cool - the moldings around the windows, the exhaust fans, the office sign - all of it awesome!

Still not quite finished but I added the main sign & shag carpeting. The masonite base will get painted to look like asphalt. The sign was from a book on motels, the rocket was adapted froma Buzz Lightyear toy.

I got a little more work done. I made a masonite parking lot & painted it black, misted it with a bit of gray & tan & then painted on some tar patches. I used chalk to dust it in a bit. I also added the palm trees to the lot. I still have some final detailing to do but I think it's pretty close. I think the next things I will add to the layout will be a Route 66 billboard & a roadside cafe.

Please disregard the mess. The shop that this layout will be housed in is under construction. The drywall is almost done & when it is, everything will get switched around & sorted out. The layout will actually rest up against one of the walls that will have a background painted on it when it's done. IMO a clean, uncluttered room is important for presentation. I'm not there yet though. : )

This track is up there with my favorites. Great detail throughout. I guess Jocko will be staying somewhere besides the Rocket Motel.
