Welcome Trevize ,
Cjent and Brian are the experts here, but I'll give you my humble opinion.
I've been racing 1/32 and in both modes for a few years. The Carrera 1/32 -1/24 track is a great system, but does take a large foot print and can get expensive. There are many more choices in Carrera 1/32 digital as far as car selection and added extras ..Having said that,I've also raced the 1/43 scale off and on for a few yeas also.I just recently purchased Carrera's 1/43 digital system. So it is still new to me.Bought a 2 car set ready to go.I added another car and controller for about $44 more bucks...I like it.It does have it's limits in the ready to run version, but one can advance past these limits if they choose to.It is fun just like it is too.I'm running so-called ghost cars buy using the ol' rubber band trick on the controllers..
#1 - am I wrong in seeing that 1:32 cars have a greater variety and seem to be cheaper?
Much greater Variety, but the cars are close to twice the cost of 1/43 .I gave $22 for a d143 car on sale..
#2 - are there any differences in the digital command of 1:43 vs 1:32?
yes, several. In the stock form of d143 you can only run 3 cars and change lanes,no ghost car,no fueling,no pits,etc..With additions to the d132 system one can do all of these things plus more. You don't get all of this with a basic d132 set though you do have Ghost car function plus the cars can be set to run analog also.It is a very good system...One can update the 1/43 system to include Ghost cars refueling and such, but you will have to incorporate some of the d132 system into the 1/43.Such as chipping cars, adding the d143 black box,etc...Thus more expense
#3 - How easy is it to buy a basic set of 1:43 Carrera GO and add Digital control?
you would need d143 cars, power supply, lane changers, red box and controllers. In other words the Go track is the same, but everything else will need to be added.Cheaper to by one of the $170 sets..
#4 - Where are the best places to buy track? I'm thinking of starting with a RTR set and adding track but track seems scarce for 1:43
I've found track at several places.Even local return stores for a very good price..Also Cjent (American Slot car world) and Brian at BRS hobbies all members here sell the track..
In closing,I like the footprint of the 1/43 track.I also like the simplicity of it..Lot's of racing in a small area. You can set up this stuff in just about the same area of an HO set..Check out 'my new D143 layout with jam cars'...post.This will show you want can be done on a 36 by 80 inch Hollow core door with a 24 by 32 inch extension added..
Hope this helps.I'm sure some of the other guys will have some great info for you.. :)
