It seems like a shame to destroy such a beautiful car, but it's their car and they can do as they see fit. :( I guess it's better than paying out millions in lawsuits. :)

So far the only comment I agree with is that it is a shame to do this. Chrysler has NOT lost its mind. I'm sure Jenny can chime in with why this is done and that ALL manufacturers do stuff like this. As these are NOT street legal they can't be used. Schools are often given them and the companies often keep them. However, they can't all be saved as there isn't a place that can house them all. Sadly, the Vipers are all pre-prod cars and while some are in places that can keep them, most of them are not.

Don't ask me about the GM and Ford cars I've seen this happen with. Colorado was a long-time proving ground. I've seen pre-prod cars of all shapes and sizes sent off this way.

...and then there is the current generation Challenger convertible that was Sublime green...it almost killed me when they crushed that one.

There are ways around the crushing....make the cars undriveable. Back around 2000 I was a VW Service Manager at a dealer in Dayton. The Dayton area was a big GM town. Among other things they did airbag research. Our dealership was the closest one to one facility so they brought us a car.....a brand new Skoda (this was after VW bought Skoda) they had been doing airbag development on. No crashes just fitting air bags where they never had been. Anyway they brought it to us to remove the complete fuel system because they were going to cut it in half and donate it to a local school as it was in no way US legal. Now I know what would happen to that Viper motor if they left it intact but things could be done to render it useless but still be a training aid short of crushing. :twocents-mytwocents:

Sarge is right. It is pure lawyer garbage that crushes works of art for flimsy excuses. Its nonsense to think otherwise, no matter what they say. Besides, the word "donated" doesn't mean there is a retention of ownership. Its "donated", that's the end of it. If someone drives it illegally, they can pay the fine. The end.

All of the big three U.S. auto makers and the auto makers of other countries crush and destroy new cars every day, and we all pay for it in the cost of the new cars we buy from them. Most of them have huge lots of new cars that they overproduced and couldn't sell, and after 2 or 3 years of setting around, they go to the crusher. They either can't or won't sell them as new anymore even though they were never on the road. When the last great recession/depression hit, they had so many cars left over they couldn't sell they crushed more then they sold. This Viper is only one in a long list of neat cars that should be saved, but will be crushed. The Chrysler Turbine, GM's EV1, and a few others come to mind that any car enthusiast would loved to have all got crushed. All huge corporations operate this way, with massive amounts of waste, It's a wonder that any of them can stay in business. Then they want to cut the workers wages and benefits to pay for there waste all the while the CEO's take home millions.

Title them as race cars, making them illegal for the street. Reclaim them when the educational institution is done with them, and auction them off as race cars.

Crushing just seems stupid to me.
