Delving into the chickens gizzards that is Slot.it Group C..

Postby Cosmic Bilby » Fri Apr 18, 2014 9:07 pm

G'day Guys,

Got to build a car for our Slot.it Group C class at club....

.....Our club will be running on Artin, with magnet.

Just perusing the Slot.it website and noticed the new Porsche released (yellow) is currently the lightest car in their catalog. The original 956 is 71 grams, the XJR12 jags seem to be the heaviest.

Don't really know where to start, what Slot.it Group C car is best?

Orange endbell or original white endbell motor?

Does a few grams matter? Is the Evo6 chassis worthwhile getting?

I've owned them all over the years, probably my favourite was the original 956 Joest Racing Newman livery, I still have it, it just seems to run that bit better than the others.

Any thoughts?

G'day Harry,

Yes, I've been delving through the HRW review archives to check out your thoughts on these models...

This 962 LH is only 1 gram heavier than the new yellow livery KH. I prefer the Shell livery as well, its nice (and its on Forza as well!).....

The motor situation is ok, they are hard to get, but they can still be had as a NOS spare part :)

I know the orange end-bell motors are supposed to be higher torque (and I have absolutely no reason to doubt Robert L. his motor list is brilliant), but I happened on some "Burnt orange" colored end-bell motors that just didn't perform in the Slot.it. cars I was racing at the time, they really sucked actually.

The white end-bell motors seem to be better for me, but the ones I currently have, have seen a fair bit of use, hence the new ones coming.

I think you are right H, this 962 will be the go for what I need for club.

Am happy to be getting back into 1/32, will be good to do both them and the drag stuff :)

Lots of answers, but as long as you are looking at everything Group C, don't overlook the Lancia. They have some of the best handling characteristics of any of the Group C cars. At least that is the view from my driver's seat.

I love the high wing Porsches as well as the IMSA versions of them. The new yellow Porsche is a doll and handles really well. I have to agree with Czar as the Lancia's handle really well too. The Lancia is usually my go to Slot It when I run them but I like them all. Its hard to go wrong with any of them really just personal preference of what you like most.

one simple consideration......the Porsches come in high and low wing configurations and some high wing cars can get hung up on stock plastic guardrails on plastic track. I have never raced on Artin, and don't know what the stock guardrails are like, but this was a consideration when running on Scaley Sport track, even with the outside borders in place. Just something to consider. I prefer the Orange motors myself.....for what its worth.

If you are racing magnets then weight is critical. All other things even the lighter car will always win. (Weight + mag downforce weight) divided by (weight). The bigger you can make this ratio the better off you will be. Example: car weighs 75g plus 100g downforce ratio is 175/75 = 2.33 Now reduce weight to 70g 170/70 = 2.43. Cornering force is F = V^2/r where V = velocity and r is the radius of a corner. For a given corner radius we have F proportional to V^2. So how much faster can I go? F increase is 2.43/2.33 proportional to V^2. Take the square root of (2.43.2.33) = 1.021 You have just gained a 2% increase in cornering speed by being 5g lighter. And a magnet marshal will read the same mag downforce!! Weight is critical, why do you think Maurizio has shaved off weight in his cars?

What are the rules? Can you fit a lexan vac formed interior? Someone makes those paper interiors ones as well. Do you need to run an interior? Do you need to run a rear wing?

The mag strength is proportional to 1/r^3. Get that sucker as low as you can, it will make a huge difference. Mount the magnet as close to the rear axle line as possible. Dont just place the mags in the pockets. Glue two bar magnets end on so that you effectively have one long magnet that is twice as long as a standard magnet and glue it in place. I did some simple calculations for a manufacturer once and this alone was worth 3% in cornering speed and the good thing was it barely registered an increase in the mag reading on something like a magnet marshall. These two little tricks Ive just highlighted have gained you an extra 5% cornering speed and as far as a magnet marshal is concerned it would give you the exact same reading!!

Do it, you know Roger Penske would!!

cheers

......My God, I am Gobsmacked.....

Guys, thank you for the replies :)

I've ended up ordering a few cars to tinker with, they are the Porsche 962 IMSA (Blue and white one, the Coke one looks a bit Boganish), a Fortuna 962C (it will probably cop a re-paint to the #4 Camel livery), the Hugo Boss livery 956C (this one should have the white end bell and reverse motor mount) and a "Totip" livery LC2 Lancia. I like it because of the livery and the weirdy tacked on air deflector on the nose of the model.....

I think that should cover all the bases, I have got a couple of other 956's, Jags, Mazda, Lancia LC2 and a Sauber Merc that are in with my other runners. Will have to sit down and have a proper Test and Tune day with them to work out which is best on the new club layout thats getting built.

Hopefully I'll be able to decide (I love Slot.it Group C!), still have that Porsche leaning though, they were a definitive car for me back in the 80's :)

Thanks again guys!
