O.K. not sure where the thread went, but there was some discussion a while back about 3D printing and detail.
My Shapeways order arrived last week (Thx, Peter & Datto), I ordered a boatload of Chassis and one Body.
Well, the chassis were pretty much as I expected, But I was really anticipating seeing the body. I had heard that the Printed bodies lacked detail and were very Rough. Happily that turned out not to be the case at all!! The Aston Martin Body I got was not smooth as glass, but I would not say it was rough either! The finish was a bit like that of an eggshell or maybe a little toothier. In my opinion the surface is probably almost ideal, because you will paint it anyway and after a couple layers of paint it should smooth out nicely!
The only real problem I had was that the designer of the body should have included some reinforcing ribs underneith and made the shell a little thicker, because mine arrived cracked! :violence-stickwhack: It was so thin in places I could read through it! :scared-eek:
Overall, I am encouraged though, because after Chassis this will be what we all go to!!
The future looks bright! :music-rockout:
