Ah the beauty of technology . . . . . 302 vs 4.6 liter.
With the advent of the 4.6 liter V-8 the fuel efficiency of the larger vehicles started to improve.
My trusty "Old Blue" 1998 Ford F-150 pickup truck with the 4.6 liter V-8 and 5 speed manual transmission could, when I drove it properly, get almost 22 mpg on the highway traveling at 55 mpg (secondary roads).
My wife's 2002 Expedition, also with the 4.6 liter V-8 and Automatic with overdrive will get almost that much as well.
I have not had any experience with the newer cars as the Expedition still runs like a new vehicle, has no body deterioration - the sun is hard on finishes here in Florida - and is paid for.
Good luck with the Mountaineer.
