TGIF - Memorial Day Weekend

Postby HomeRacingWorld » Fri May 23, 2014 7:44 am

We will take time here to remember those that gave all and honor them by enjoying our weekend to it's fullest.

Tonight we head to the "big city" for an evening of eating pizza and some shopping. My Hobby Lobby is my "local hobby shop" and it's coupon weekend. Time to look for toys and some refills on brass.

Hopefully have some time to work on this old jalopy too. Looking forward to this build. Also have a SRC Alfa on the bench. Bad chassis deformity, but looks like I have it lined out.

We wish you all have a great weekend with your friends and family.

Well Memorial Day Weekend is once again upon us.

I will more than likely make a trip over to the Florida National Cemetary. It's along the thoughts of Arlington, but it's located here in Florida. Many states have them. Memorial Day it is festooned with lots of bunting and lots of red, white and blue. Our veterans are buried here and what a wonderful place to give thanks to each and every one of them that gave some or all for our country.

Of course there will be cooking, eating and watching races this weekend as well. Sunday is an 1100 mile racing day, 500 at Indy and 600 at Charlotte. It will be a long day, but an enjoyable one.

I wish all of our members here on HRW a fantastic and safe time this Memorial Day Weekend.

Thanks for starting this post. My father served in WWII but rarely talked about it. Late in life he told me he was one of the soldiers who went up to Hitler's Wolf's Lair at the end of the war. When he died my brother, a Navy veteran, contacted the VFW and they did a 21 gun salute at his funeral - very moving. Thanks to all the vets and blessing to all their families. I really appreciate Marty's comments.

Remember listening to the Indy 500 on the radio? In the mid-late 60's I could tell you the name of every driver in the field and would race my slot cars while listening to every lap. For a change of pace I really wanted the turbine cars to win and was crushed when the last one broke with 4 laps to go. Foyt, Andretti, Unser(s), Rutherford, Johncock, etc. Wow, what memories.

I pulled my Travelin' Big D oval out of the shop yesterday to tune her up for her first outing in almost a year. Saturday morning I will be towing her into to the county museum for Memorial weekend festivities including a Maker Fair, the steam up of several historical logging locomotives and a classic car show. This may be The Big D's last outing as I am seriously considering downsizing my slot track scene to make more room in my shop. The D takes up a lot (7 1/2 ft. X 19 ft.) of space which I want to free up for other purposes. That means she and another road track will likely be scrapped.

Wishing all HRW members and friends a safe and Happy Memorial Day weekend. Thanks to all the Veterans and there Families and to those Vets that gave all. :handgestures-salute:

Not much happening here this weekend. Just know it's three days off and plenty of racing to watch. Hoping to put a major dent in the Nugen. Would like to be turning laps soon.

No big plans here. Wife is out of town. Maybe I'll have some time to catch up on some projects.
Going to Phil's for the Maverick proxy tonight.

Car show, maybe Indy.

My uncle was also in WWII, he landed at Normandy. I used to ask him about it when I was a kid, and he'd just say "you don't want to hear about that stuff". He said it, not like "it was really awful" (but it was), he said it more like "you wouldn't think it's very interesting". I'd push and push, but he wouldn't tell me. I didn't realize until I was older how difficult it was for him. One of my uncles was in the air force in the Pacific, and he always had funny stories to tell about being in the military at that time. I never understood why, when he told his stories, my other uncle would get quiet. At the time I didn't know that his experiences in the war were very, very different. Having landed at Normandy was a huge badge of honor, but there was nothing joyful or glorious about it. Just an awful and sickening task that had to be done. And if we truly want to honor these men, we should be vowing to prevent the need for such sacrifices again, not wandering from one brutal conflict to the next with a chip on our shoulders, trying to prove to the world how tough we are.

My Father was a WW2 Vet. He went ashore about two weeks after the D-Day invasion. He said how there was still a lot off stuff floating in the water. Not to be cruel or heartless but the Sargent kept imploring the soldiers....." Just keep moving, there's nothing you can do for them.Just look straight ahead, and keep moving."My Father like most Vets who saw combat, NEVER, talked about it.If anything it would be anecdotal stories of day to day living but, nothing about anything else! May all Soldiers who paid the ultimate price rest peacefully. :flags-waveusa: :handgestures-salute:

Yea, the big flag will go up Monday. Most of the men in my family were in the service. I got out because
I was working for a company that made gun and bomb parts. My mother was training for WASP service
when they cut the program. She was going to fly bombers from O-Hare to the east coast.
For me it's new brakes on the Mustang, and some yard work if the ground dries up some.

My dad is a veteran of WWII and Korea, but he never has talked about it. At 99 years of age he doesn't have to, I can't imagine what those men went through, but I'm thankful they did. He was in the Pacific theater, which isn't mentioned as often as the European theater. A big thank you to all who served and remembrance of those who gave their all. Have a safe and happy Memorial Day. :)
