Scalextric white Dodge Challenger

Postby Modlerbob » Sat May 24, 2014 12:59 am

I saw it on ebay BIN for $45. now there;s a white car I would leave white and do my Vanishing Point reenactment. Only problem is that it doesn't come with the nude on the motor bike. Still I almost pulled the trigger as that was one of my favorite movies of that period.

Does anyone actually know why Kowalski has a destiny to meet with "death". Thats never really explained well in the movie. Or is the viewer left to interpret why? Is it a social commentary on the US state of mind in the early 70s? Watch closely as the Challenger is driven so fast into the Dozer that it actually changes into a Camaro as it hits. :D

That's one of the things that I actually like about the Viggo Mortensen remake. It actually explains why he keeps going. Not too bad as far as remakes go.

I think if you watch closely there are hints that kowalski had a girl friend or wife who died and somehow he felt responsible. Here is a synopsis:
"Barry Newman plays a car delivery driver named Kowalski who works for Argo's Car Delivery Service in Denver, Colorado and is assigned to deliver a white 1970 Dodge Challenger to San Francisco. Flashbacks which appear throughout the movie hint that he has either lost everything he has ever wanted and was reduced to taking the job of a car delivery driver as a last resort, or he is (what is called today) an adrenaline junkie. He is a Medal of Honor winning Vietnam veteran, a former law enforcement officer, former race car driver, and former motorcycle racer. He lost his job as a cop apparently after being framed in a drug bust, perhaps in retaliation for preventing his partner from raping a young girl. He seemingly gave up his automobile and motorcycle racing careers after two near-fatal accidents. He flashes back to a girlfriend, first in a snow-covered landscape, then at the California shore. Vera offers Kowalski marijuana, and comments on his war wound. Vera appears to be Kowalski's great love, and her death while surfing appears to be a major factor in Kowalski's alienation and resignation to death in the film."

On other words he was looking for a way to die.

I always thought that by the time he got to the dozers he was speeding his head off (chemically) and thought; "I've done everything else and gotten away with it, I can do this too!"

Lynne I have to disagree with you...this was an ill advised remake; fans of the original (like me) were going "nope, did it wrong" and the whole flavor of the remake was an overblown tv show. With the original you were into the movie...... experiencing it in the 70s probably helped a bit :scared-eek:

:auto-layrubber: :auto-swerve: :auto-driving:

I made a trip from Keesler AFB, Ms to England AFB, La in my 72 Comet GT right after seeing it the first time.........set a personal record but in retrospect I'm suprised I'm here to tell the tale!

I haven't seen the remake as I didn't think the story could be told any better. Yeah, being higher than a kite would most likely create a sense of euphoria in that situation.

His eyes were "pinned" on most of the close ups. So whatever he bought wasnt "uppers" or speed as the movie suggested, but I suppose Im being picky.

I doubt that Barry Newman would go that far toward an accurate portrayal or that the movie producers would let him. You can't fake too easily that wired look in the eyes.

I guess by the time I actually got to see it I'd heard so much about it that it was bound to disappoint. Same with Bullitt, really.

I suppose youre going to dis the Hanna Barbera Wacky Races as well Embs??

What about Claude Lelouch's C'etait Rendezvous?? Surely this makes the grade?? Yes I know it was filmed in a Merc but just imagine its a 275 GTB. They got the sound absolutely correct, even down to the double declutch downshifts.

If you're going to go into cartoons Rick, then you have got to include the Count of Cagliostro.

You know what. I didn't think the remake was that bad.
In fact I actually thought it was ok.

Ok as far as fans of the original were concerned it was never going to stack up against the original.

But at about the same time that the remake came out, the other car movies at the time were "Running from the guns" and "Midnight Spares"........ What you don't remember them !! Well that's because they were total Carp. So as far as car movies at the time went, the VP remake was almost Oscar material. :D

I shudder to think what the new Mad Max Films will be like. ( In the eyes of non car people, it will be better acting and editing, better plot, better everything) But will the cars have the same aura that the originals had, I think not. The original reached cult status perhaps, not in spite of it's obvious faults but possibly because of them !!

As far as car movies go, I've seen them all and loved/hated them all, originals and remakes.

But Please, Please , Please don't ever remake that Stallone Indy car movie (I cant quite remember the name and possibly don't want to) because it was perfect in every way and I'd hate to see it ruined.    :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling:

As far as the Challenger is concerned, go on Bob, make it, You know you want to !!!!

To truely make that Challenger look authentic as it hits the Dozer its gonna have to be made to look like a white 67 Camaro :o
