Midwest Short track questions.

Postby downtowndeco » Wed Jun 18, 2014 2:18 pm

I got myself some artin track & I'll be building a classic short track. R1 & R2 curves so it fits on a 4' x 10'. Questions. I grew up in Northern Wisconsin in the mid 70's w/ # 99 Dick Trickle was king. I'd like to do a build of one of his cars + several others that raced in that era. Will 1/24th cars work on the artin track (especially w/the R1's) or do I need to stick to 1/32? I don't mind it being tight but it has to be at least half way functional. : ) The other question is what is the usual chassis/body combos guys use for these type of builds? Plastic track, no mag. Thanks much!

Artin track has a 3" lane spacing so it really isn't big enough for 1/24. The inside lane of an R1 curve is pretty tight for 1/24 too. You could always run every other lane starting at lane 2 and lane 4 if you have a wide enough apron on the outside. That would allow you to play with your 1/24 cars in 2 lanes. Ninco track is barely wide enough to run 1/24 tightly but Carrera is the way to go for the big scales if you want to run on plastic.

Several years ago the SEMO bunch was running 1/24 cars on H&R chassis on an Artin oval. It was tight both inside lane radius and lane spacing wise, but it worked. As long as the cars were moving, we could pass each other. Maybe physics don't work here like they do in the rest of the world! ;) There should be a picture or two around here somewhere. Just for curiosity's sake I will try to find them and post a couple.

I have recently built an artin oval,i am using six lanes tho,but I can tell you the r1.r2 lanes are tight! I only run 1/32 scale, and we run everthing from Saturday night specials to jalopys and all are no magnet, I hope you enjoy your new oval as much as we do!

Thanks guys, 1/32 it is. Looking at that inner lane on the R1 it really looked like it would have been tight. If I had some 1/24th stockers I would test it but I'm not going to build 2 or 3 & then find out my track is too small. Sort of like Robinson Crusoe & the canoe. : )

Don't know what kind of speed your looking for,but I run a lot of artin chassis cars because I really like the scale speed and driveability of them.I also find them very easy to adapt to almost any body I want to run,
Prof motor sells them they are American thunder nascar stockers he gets about $26.99 at last look, you can also buy a whole 4 lane track with r3/r4 turns and wall and 4 cars for $60.00 plus shipping off e-bay,she has lots of sets left to sell

I pulled out a 1/24 Revell COY Nascar kit that I have here and put a ruler across the body. It is close to 3 1/8 in. wide. I also measured a 1/25 mid 80's Camaro. It's one of those dealer promo models that can be found on ebay. It is a little under 3" wide. You could run 1/25 with a lot of fender banging if you keep the tires inside the fenders. But ain't bangin' fenders what short track racing is all about? You still gotta have wide aprons to make it right.
