I love stories like these; can you imagine how the "upper crust" teams felt? Makes you wonder where it is today. I see the inspiration for some "stocker based" sports car killers in 1/32. (Hmmmm, Truxmore Torino comes to mind)

My first car in 1979 was a Pontiac Tempest. 326ci V8, bias-ply tires, 2-speed auto. My grandmother had a 1962 Tempest and would be nice to do the retro '63 Daytona winner. Didn't the early Tempests have some kind of funky curved engineered driveshaft?

Did the race use only the tri-oval or also the road course in the infield? Either way... the "cubic inch" theory doesn't hold up: The Tempest also spanked 427 powered Sting Ray's.

Yes I remember the '62,
Must have been that then rhe rear gearbox. My grandmothers was the 4 cyl, it was white and the auto shifter was on the dash and operated with a lever.

According to the article, it had the rear transaxle unit...

The real genius in these cars was the rear mounted trans-axle that was certainly not a favorite of drag strip competitors, but had to have made Goldsmiths life easier when trying to get this car to turn and stay stuck to a race track.

Always have had a soft spot for the Olds and Pontiacs from back before the "corporate" drive line / styling mandates. :D

This is interesting. Wish I had this to ponder at the ripe young age of 12 when my grandfather told me the drive shaft wasn't straight… :think:
So, reading the story, Mercedes-Benz nabbed the car after the race. Are they sure? Must have been stashed away and the Porsche 924 engineers grabbed it...
