white metal & glue

Postby Ember » Sat Aug 02, 2014 9:42 pm

I've been given some white metal figures to review for a new producer. It's been an age since I last dealt with white metal figures and kits. I'm afraid I can't remember what type of glue I used to use to put them together prior to filling and priming.

Looking at some of my old dragons, whatever I was using 20 years ago seems to have had a limited lifespan anyway.

Does anyone have any favourites that they would care to recommend?

Oddly enough John, they do. :) And actually not a bad looking set of triplets.

I'm sure I used epoxy on the figure and critters I did 20 years ago. I know I used a 2 part epoxy filler. Many have given up the ghost on their bonds. In fact, the only one that hasn't fallen to bits is a large gryphon that sits on my mantelpiece. But, it's possible I used 5 minute epoxy on the smaller pieces. I know I didn't drill and pin anything as I have taken to doing with resin figures.

Hi Lynne, the answer to, your question,,, from the man himself is super glue gel...
He said it grabs good particularly when he has a case of the shakes.
Good Luck with your review

Be sure to let me know how it goes. Mine are somewhere over the Atlantic as we speak.
And yes I am looking forward to them.
Its a matter of figuring the best spots to put them,,,

White metal needs super glue gel and pinning for multipart kits.

The metal pieces has to be washed carefully to remove any casting release agent. I usually simply use some water and soap. My 1st hobby is miniatures painting and wargaming ;)

I too use super glue gel and pinning. With JB Weld metal filled epoxy for filling. The JB is a little harder to sand, but it lasts. The figures I did were about 20 years ago and still together. I wouldn't dare put pics of them in here as they are very racy gals. :)

For filling you can also use green stuff (kneadatite, sold in 36" ribbon on ebay for a few bucks). It's also a great product to customize your minis (adding a scarf, glasses, beard, whatever). But it's easier to work with "in the fresh", once dry it's hard to sand it.

You can also use the old school technic : mix of milliput putty + water. This solution once dry can be sanded easily.

A new ready to use product exists these days in miniatures modelling called "liquid green stuff" from Citadel/gamesworkshop, especially for filling. But I never tested it.
