I had to step away from this conversation yesterday because I got a bit lightheaded after reading btaylor's comments. I love muscle cars from the 60's and early 70's and the Trans Am race cars are my favorites. I'm collecting cars to race that are replicas of cars that actually ran in a sanctioned Trans Am race at least once. But, like some of the slot car manufactures who've taken slight liberties with body year and style, so have I as long as they pass my own 'close enough' criteria. I'm actually more concerned the driver of record actually raced a car with this likeness, either back in the day or today in the Historic Trans Am series.

But, I still assert that my tracks exist in a unique place in time and space. It's a place where Dan Gurney and Parnelli Jones can still battle for a win. Where famous cars and drivers that might have departed this mortal coil and passed through the Pearly Gates (or not) in the minds of some, such as Jerry Titus, still pull their seat belts tight and take their place on the starting grid. Being the race director of such a facility is why I delight in spending so much time and $ on these things. Any notion I'm just another old dude playing with toy cars is beyond my comprehension. It's akin to suggesting the Emperor's new clothes aren't as fine as claimed, which I hope most of us agree is preposterous.

Slothead, I certainly hope you did not think i was belittling your Desire to run only replicas of actual cars,as i was not.
I was merely trying to point out that this hobby can be adapted to our own needs as far as "accuracy"goes.
I have a Mid- 60's Dirt Oval, that i will not race modern cars on, (testing only) and the cars i build for it are as accurate to the time period as i can get. I do not try to emulate actual vintage race cars on every build, but rather try to capture the "feeling" of cars from said time period. My 1/32 track is not Dirt, only painted for the illusion,and my cars are not replicas of real life Oval warriors,I do have a few, but i respect those that strive for that kind of accuracy in their collections,and if that is what makes you happy, then i am by all means for it.

No offense taken, nor with any of the comments we make here when tossing our 2 cents worth into a thread. I decided I wouldn't add the #46 Castrol Camaro to my field, but I do have a '68 Mustang version of the #57 which was actually a '70. Better than letting the Pioneer Mustang gather dust. Yes, as race director at the track I have certain responsibilities to enforce the rules, but then again I have a close relationship with the owner and he looks the other way now and then. Great guy to work for.

This reminds me of the card with a picture of a woman sitting at a bar, with the caption - part of me says I have to stop drinking like this. The other parts of me say "Don't listen to her, she's drunk".

PS: an image didn't load in the prior post of Trans Am cars, the #46 Castrol Camaro was painted orange and renumbered as the #27 of Walter Parkins. I think I even got the year right on this one.
