Show-Me Showdown Newbie

Postby slothead » Sat Oct 10, 2015 4:09 pm

I know I'm about 2 week late, but after getting involved with Shotgun Dave's thread about his chassis build, I'm going to join the fun.

I'll start by asking some questions so I'm on track before committing to a design and starting work on a car. This is my first proxy and all responses are welcome.

1) Is there an 'official' way to enter? Let me know what is needed.

2) Does anyone know if the special deals from SCC for this proxy are still available? If so I'll order their wheels, tires, and motor to get started.

3) If I choose the Stock Car wheels from C.B. Design do I still need to have inserts? I've never done inserts before.

4) My first thought is to use a body I have on hand - a Pioneer '68 Mustang fastback (one of the Black & Gold cars) that didn't make it into my Trans Am field. This car doesn't look like anything from last year's entries at the moment, so the question is will it work? Yes, I'll hog out the wheel wells, give it a stocker stance with bumpers and nerf bars, and add appropriate decals.

5) I spent the afternoon looking at all the Showdown stuff Harry and others have posted and think I have a bead on what will work. Thanks for all the info on scratch building a chassis and for the images on what was under last year's cars. All of them were brass, but that isn't specified in the rules. Would it be okay to experiment with a carbon fiber chassis, or with other materials? I've used a range of materials for my custom built dirt modified chassis - plastic, printed circuit board stock, etc. What about a hybrid design that combines materials, but is still scratch built except for the motor bracket? I'll do whatever fits the overall proxy intention.

Your thoughts about these things will help me get started. Thanks.

Thanks for the clarification - saw 'from scratch', but not 'brass'. I can do that and am ready to start work on a design.

First task will be figuring out the motor mount. SCC does not show brass motor mounts on their webpage. Where can I get that beefy brass mount on the Stinker Chassis build post? And who knows of a place to order all the brass parts suggested? My nearest hobby shop is 90 miles away so even though I prefer to patronize brick-and-mortar businesses it will be easier to get stuff online to get started.

Slothead -
Welcome to the fun! :handgestures-thumbup:

Chicagoland Toys and Hobbies has a good selection of brass sheet / tube for when you can't get to a brick and mortar location:

Happy hunting! :D

Thanks guys. I searched the SCC list of categories and didn't see anything except motor pods under 'parts (by type)'. Then after doing my last post did a Bing search and up pops the motor mount I want at SCC.

I just sent an email to Chicagoland Hobbies asking if they can put an order together for me of all the brass stock listed on the Stinker Chassis review. I might as well stock up now.

I should also finally get a chassis jig to replace the (lousy) wood one I made. I know some of the HRW guys make them and they would be my first choice - references sought.

Quick link to a thread on the honeycomb set up: http://homeracingworld.us/viewtopic.php ... ycomb+pins

Quick link to a thread on the adjustable jig RazorJon makes: http://homeracingworld.us/viewtopic.php ... +jig+razor

Both are VERY handy! :)

I'm probably getting ahead of myself, but if anyone knows the mounted size (height) of XPG 22168FF tires on 15 x 11 C.B. Design wheels I can start laying out some chassis designs on graph paper.

It wouldn't hurt to know the height of XPG'S on 15 x 10 wheels for the front too, but not as important as the rear for starters. I won't cut any stock or do any soldering until I have all the parts to do a mock up on a jig.

Thanks.

Been thinking about the Showdown - decided the Pioneer Mustang doesn't go with other cars entered, so I'm going to use a Monogram '65 Ford Fairlane body. It'll look more like a Saturday night special when done.

Chassis question - found some old 1/24th scale brass ones I built 25 years ago which were a mixture of a brass plate with brass rods & piano wire. I used a motor mount plate for alignment, then soldered the motor and rear axle tube right onto the chassis plate & rails. Is this approach okay? I know this is for fun and want to go with the flow.

I have no idea how the above will compare to Stinker chassis type cars, just relying on Old Skool thinking for now. God only knows how it will end up.

Your design sounds interesting. If it's a mix of brass and steel rod, sure it's fine.

As long as it's inline to go with the rest of the field.

It is just for fun, and because of that our goal is to have a field of cars that will run together closely.

There is all sorts of room for creativity with these models. It's a different kind of race as the primary focus is the modeling itself. The fun of just building.

And I like your thoughts on body choice. That old Ford would be perfect.
