Re: GVSCC Targa Florio Proxy

Postby Retro Racer 44 » Sat Nov 21, 2015 1:41 am

A crew of eight GVSCC members turned out to Perry's this afternoon to run the Targa Proxy cars on the Rocket. The Rocket is the closest thing we have in our club to a commercial raceway, that is for driving and speed. Although Perry does not keep track records, the fastest group B car were completing laps in about 5 seconds. The track is smooth and has no tricks, such as squeezes, kinks or humps. The track is mainly flat except for the largest diameter 180 degree turn that is banked to allow the cars to take it at full throttle or close to it, depending on the car. Heavier cars that handle well had this advantage.

Don (TF1250) Alwyn (Superslab) Dan (vtecfour) Luf (oldslotracer) and Mike shared the driving. They changed between classes. Perry was the race director, I handled the paperwork, and Doug (fotodoug) took video. Those of us not driving did the marshalling as well. When we were finished we went into Perry's house where his wife, Caroline, had made a pot of delicious chill for supper. If that was not enough, we then went back to garage for four sets of regular Friday night racing, and we are doing it again tomorrow at Roger's Cobalt Causeway.

Again with a very different track, we had some very different results. Yes the same few are holding firm at the top, but there was some shuffling of the deck below, as some cars were able to stretch their legs on the longer straightaways.

Anyway, you are waiting for the results, eh?

The leaderboard after round 4 is attached to this post. There are a few changes and three cars within a point in the middle of class A, and four cars within a point in class B. This is very close racing.

Thanks to the GVSCC proxy team for running this round at Perry's Rocket. You guys are doing a terrific job running this proxy!

Wow! Another great result in Class B for my 908/3 and another close battle with Doug's 917 Spyder. It's a 1-2 finish for Porsche. It will be fun watching the video. Keith's Ferrari produced another podium and is keeping the heat on Doug for 2nd place overall. Stewart, with another consistent finish is keeping the heat on Keith. Adrienne slipped back somewhat after her 2nd place finish but 4th place is hotly contested by five cars.

The powerful Class B racing is even closer. Chris and Luf continue their race for the top with consistently high finishes with Steve and Andy contesting for the third podium position. Fourth place overall is even closer in Class B with, as Keith mentioned, one point separating four cars.

Each new round shuffles the deck. Good luck with today's racing. GVSCC continues to provide this hobby with one of the best proxies, and perhaps the best coverage. Great job, guys!

I know that tonight, when I roll over in the middle of the night, I'll be grabbing my iPad and checking for the latest results, lol! (Get a life, Bob. ........Naaaaaa, this is too much fun.)

Well done, GVSCC!

A wild afternoon of racing on yet another different track. Roger's Cobalt Causeway is an 82 foot four lane track with elevation changes, squeezes, and some tight turns for the inside lanes.

Since some of you, I know, are waiting up on the east coast for these results, I will post them now and comment later.

What a great afternoon of racing we just had on Roger's Cobalt Causeway. Eight members of the GVSCC came out on a Saturday to run the last race to ever be held on the Causeway, as Roger is taking it down to prepare to sell his house. Dan, Bruce Don and Mike handled the driving, with Luf on his camera, Roger on the computer and I sorted the cars and did the recording. Murray came by part way through to help out with the marshalling,

The Causeway is one of our longest tracks, but as you will see in the videos later, it only really has one medium length straight and the rest is sweepers. squeezes and tight turns. Car that had a high power to weight ratio often got into trouble here, and also too often collected the car following them. Marshalling was quick and efficient, but too many offs really affected lap scores for several cars.

We ran two minute heats, using all four lanes, and the totals were surprisingly close. If you study the lap counts, there were several cars in groups that were within a one lap span.

Again a different track shuffled the deck, and resulted in some spreading out of the numbers on the leaderboard. More pictures and video to follow.

Thanks for posting the results from the round at Roger's Cobalt Causeway, Keith. You must be slowly morphing yourself onto a different time zone with all of these late night posts from the West Coast! ;)

Congratulations to Bob and Luf for their wins in A and B Classes!! :text-bravo: :text-bravo: Bob, I think you're going for finish out this proxy with less than 10 total points - amazing!!

Where to next? Is it back to Lufs Targa for a run in reverse?

This round had some incredibly close racing and must have been a blast for GVSCC to run.

In Group A, Doug chased me through the checkered flag for another 1-2 Porsche finish. In the process, he put a few more points between his 917 and Keith's Ferrari to increase his hold on 2nd place overall. Adrienne grabbed another podium, finishing just behind Doug and moving herself up to 4th overall with her hopes for an overall podium spot still alive.

To give another perspective on how close some of these results are, I've used a lap distance of 82 feet and converted the total laps to total distance travelled. The last column shows the distance that separates a car from the car that finished ahead of it.

Group A

Laps Total distance. Distance from next position
48 Bob Goulet 48.56. 3981.92 ft
17 Doug Johnson 47.06 3858.92 ft. 123.0 ft
222 Adrienne Samson 46.52 3814.64 ft. 44.28 ft
79 Don McLellan 46.22 3790.04 ft. 34.60 ft
87 Keith Hines 46.08 3778.56 ft. 11.48 ft
148 Stewart Harding 45.53. 3733.46 ft. 45.10 ft
3 Dale Carstensen 44.42. 3642.44 ft. 91.02 ft
11 Mike Gatey 39.92 3273.44 ft. 369.0 ft
238 Christian Mayer 39.06 3202.92 ft. 70.52 ft
73 Bill Beggs 38.29 3139.78 ft. 63.14 ft
23 Bob Chapman 38.18 3130.76 ft. 9.02 ft
36 Daniel Heald 36.43 2987.26 ft. 143.5 ft
4 Leo Capaldi 36.32 2978.24 ft. 9.02 ft.

The racing in Group B was even closer with Chris and Luf having a Battle Royale for 1st Overall.
Chris' 2nd place finish was contested extremely closely by Andy and Steve. What a difference 4.1 ft travelled meant!

Group B

24L Luf Linkert 52.22 4282.04 ft.
20 Chris Walker 51.71 4240.22 ft. 41.82 ft
4 Andy White 51.66 4236.12 ft. 4.10 ft
85 Steve Williams 51.61 4232.02 ft. 4.10 ft
33 Perry Roussy 49.89 4090.98 ft. 141.04 ft
6 Tony Bovard 49.75 4079.50 ft. 11.48 ft
56 Don Crossley 49.43 4053.26 ft. 26.24 ft
8 Dave Zgoda 49.41 4051.62 ft. 1.64 ft
224 Dennis Samson 49.35 4046.70 ft. 4.92 ft
16 Dan Pang 48.93 4012.26 ft. 34.44 ft
3 Mike Karr 48.71 3994.22 ft. 8.04 ft
61 Mike Buss 45.95 3767.90 ft 26.32 ft
111 Keith Wells 45.81 3756.42 ft. 10.48 ft
602 Tony Palmer 45.63 3741.66 ft. 14.76 ft
238 Dave Capelen 45.34 3717.88 ft. 13.78 ft
1 Roger Lambert 45.27 3712.14 ft. 5.74 ft
34 Allan Jarvis 42.48 3483.36 ft. 228.78 ft
24 Mike Dove 41.48 3401.36 ft. 82.00 ft
36 Robert Bance 40.01 3280.82 ft 120.54 ft
13 Ron Todhunter 38.53 3159.46 ft 121.36 ft
12 Barbs Hills 35.84 2938.88 ft. 220.78 ft

Edit:

Well, the spacing didn't post the way I typed it up, but the data is still there. One example, after 4053 feet travelled, Dave Zgota was only 1.64 ft behind Don Crossley.

And, in a heart breaker, Leo Capaldi would have escaped last place if he had travelled 9.03 ft farther. If only he had one less tooth on that axle gear, or one more tooth on the pinion!

Outstanding job again, GVSCC. You guys must be having a ton of fun with this.

(Moderators: if you can fix the alignment on these columns, have at it!)

Great job guys, nice to see a few locals, "and not so regular proxy builders" in the mix and towards to pointy end of the standings.

I have looked but I can't seems to find any technical specifications on the entries, motors, tyres, chassis etc, etc. Maybe I just missed it, is it posted somewhere?

Good luck ALL, but maybe a tiny bit more luck towards my fellow GVSCC racers.... ;)
