SIP Round 3 is ready to roll.

Since recorded lap times will be used to simulate an 8 car race, the field is inverted to make it interesting. The top qualifier (#4 Chaparral) starts last and the 8th qualifier (#1 Chaparral) will start first. These 8 cars were chosen for competitiveness, with only 0.438 seconds separating the entire field during qualifications.

Starting grid for round #3 at Shelby-Hendrix Speedway:

1st) #1 Chaparral 2F - DMS Racing
2nd) #8 Ford GT40 - D&D Racing
3rd) #50 Lola T70 MK3B - CAT Racing
4th) #6F Ferrari 512S - Slothead racing
5th) #57 Porsche 917 - T-County Lug Nuts
6th) #6L Lola T70 MK3B - Racing Bandit
7th) #3 Ferrari 330 P4 - Downundathunda
8th) #4 Chaparral 2F - Oregon Donors

Pit row is alive with activity and tension as the cars are about to take to the track!

The girls said the car felt a little dogged in the midrange so my mechanics are working feverishly to find every ounce of HP in the GT40. I have confidence in the team. We may be new but we are starting to mesh and we will be ready to rumble.. :D .

Inverted start. .....that is something Racing Bandit has a little bit of experience with! Now all that is left is to see if he remembers what he is suppose to do.

To ensure complete impartiality, the cars were qualified and race lap times recorded back in January, long before teams selected their cars. Once selected, the cars in the field were inverted by qualification time and the starting grid was set.

Starting grid for SIP round #3 at Shelby-Hendrix Speedway:

1st) #1 Chaparral 2F - DMS Racing
2nd) #8 Ford GT40 - D&D Racing
3rd) #50 Lola T70 MK3B - CAT Racing
4th) #6F Ferrari 512S - Slothead racing
5th) #57 Porsche 917 - T-County Lug Nuts
6th) #6L Lola T70 MK3B - Racing Bandit
7th) #3 Ferrari 330 P4 - Downundathunda
8th) #4 Chaparral 2F - Oregon Donors

The computer based race simulation was set for 40 laps with each car’s recorded time for that lap being used to determine when it moved from its current track location to the next location. Three of the seven track sections (turn 2, hairpin turn, and loop turn) are no passing zones where cars can catch up to and follow, but not pass other cars. In the other sections (start straight, turn 3, back straight, and finish straight) cars can make passes and gain or lose positions.
DMS Racing’s # 1 Chaparral took the green flag to start the race and with no traffic to deal with got out to a decent lead. The first pass took place on lap 1 when the #3 Ferrari of Downundathunda overtook the #6L Lola of Racing Bandit on the back straight to move into 6th place.

Despite close battles for position, the next pass didn’t take place till lap 9 when the 3rd place #50 Lola of CAT Racing got by the #8 Ford GT40 of D&D Racing to move into 2nd place. At this point the DMS Racing Chaparral had a 1.7 second lead, but the CAT Racing Lola was on the move and got past the DMS Chaparral on the back straight to take the lead on lap 10.

Lap 15 race order: 1st - CAT Racing, 2nd - DMS Racing, 3rd – D&D Racing, 4th – Slothead Racing, 5th – T-County Lug Nuts, 6th – Downundathunda, 7th – Racing Bandit, 8th – Oregon Donors.

The field maintained this order till lap 24 when the #1 Chaparral of DMS Racing got out of shape and ran back to back slow laps allowing the entire field to get by it. On lap 25 the #6F Ferrari of Slothead Racing passed the #8 FordGT40 of D&D Racing to settle in 2nd place. But while the Ferrari had been battling with the Ford GT40, the #50 Lola T70 of CAT Racing had obtained a large lead and could not be caught. The rest of the field became very tightly packed together but none could muster the speed in passing sections to get by cars they trailed through no passing sections. No other passes took place during the final 25 laps of the 40 lap race.

Final race order:

1st) #50 Lola T70 MK3B – Cat Racing
2nd) #6F Ferrari 512S - Slothead Racing
3rd) #8 Ford GT40 - D&D Racing
4th) #57 Porsche 917 - T-County Lug Nuts
5th) #3 Ferrari 330 P4 - Downundathunda
6th) #6L Lola T70 MK3B - Racing Bandit
7th) #4 Chaparral 2F - Oregon Donors
8th) #1 Chaparral 2F – DMS Racing

With this type of simulation an inverted field can become nearly completely flipped in a 40 lap race. But, when the cars are very competitive with each other (as in this field) a few cars can become so tightly packed together they create a traffic jam other cars cannot get past. The data shows that the #8 Ford GT40 of D&D Racing and the #57 Porsche of T-County Lug Nuts were separated by less that a quarter of a second from lap 26 on. Despite being able to turn faster laps the Porsche was not able to get by the Ford GT40, and these two cars battled so closely the rest of the field was held at bay behind them.

The lap 9 pass by the #50 Lola T70 of CAT Racing when it got past the #8 Ford GT40 of D&D racing proved to be the move of the race, allowing CAT Racing to pull away and win the race.

I don't have an online image posting account, but if anyone wants me to send them photos of the track and cars to post for me, let me know. I can send you a few using a PM.

Thanks for the results. I don't exactly understand the simulation part but thanks. We'll endeavor to do better next time.

It's certainly not the first time Chaparrals have failed to live up to expectation, ;-)

And I'd like to thank DMS Racing for picking even more poorly. Congratulations to the rest of you.

I'm proud of the girls and the mechanics on this one. The girls were articulate enough with the mechanics to explain the issues with the car before the race and the girls drove well enough to keep the other teams at bay and ended with a respectable 3rd place finish. :auto-driving: I'm giving the other teams fair warning, we sure got off to a slow start but we're starting to fire on all 8 cylinders. Maybe a little late in the season but every little bit helps. Many thanks to the track owner for the race.

Wow, what a race!

We can´t be happier whith the results!
It was an intense race, forcing our Lola from the start, we could avoid the trafic jam in this "hard to overtake" kind of track.

After a little celebration at the local pub, all it´s packed now and ready to be on the road again , heading to Jacquelin Park!
